Cuesta geology. Nov 2, 2022 · The geology of El Morro makes the rest of the story possible. El Morro is part of a cuesta that extends well outside the boundaries of the national monument. A cuesta is a ridge with a gentle slope on one side and a steep slope or drop on the other. Spanish for "slope", a cuesta is usually tilted between 40-45 degrees, but can be much more subtle.

The correct geological term for the area is a cuesta, not a mesa. Mesas are isolated, flat-topped highlands with steeply sloping sides or cliffs, and are topped by a cap of much harder rocks that are resistant to erosion. The cap protects the softer underlying slopes or cliffs from being quickly weathered away.

Geology; WIT Transactions on the Built Environment; This paper deals with the behaviour of open rock that occurs, for example, during long wall mining in coal mines, in deep tunnel, or shaft excavation. Long wall instability leads to extrusion of rock mass into an open space. This effect is mostly referred to as a bump, or a rock burst. In geology and geomorphology, a hogback or hog's back is a long, narrow ridge or a series of hills with a narrow crest and steep slopes of nearly equal inclination on both flanks.
